Meet Ottis
Ottis Layne, MD, grew up in Texas and Ohio, close to the earth. His parents instilled in him a love for organic gardening, camping, and other outdoor activities.
He graduated from Harvard University with high honors. His medical degree is from Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine. His desire to become certified in the new area of Lifestyle Medicine came as a result of his growing interest in the complex interplay of the factors that give us longevity and health. He has published in The New England Journal of Medicine and he published The Lifestyle Medicine Physician’s Guide to Burnout.
In 1986 he cofounded Mision de Candelilla, an organization providing medical care to underserved areas of northern Mexico. He continues to hold clinics in Mexico multiple times a year. He wrote a history of the first 25 years of this mission, Changing Lives on Both Sides of the Border.
He and Sally have three children and four grandchildren. In addition to time with family, his interests include writing, gardening, playing his five string banjo, photography, star gazing, and researching health and longevity.
Meet Sally
Sally Layne, PhD, grew up in Waco, Texas, in a very close knit family. She was always allowed the freedom to explore nature and was encouraged to think outside the box. From a very young age, she dreamed of bringing health to people throughout the world.
Following graduation from Baylor University, she began cancer research at Baylor College of Medicine, where she met and married Ottis. She completed her PhD in Microbiology at Penn State College of Medicine.
The desire to live a healthy and vibrant life began with the influence of her parents-in-law. They were organic farmers many years before those growing practices were widely appreciated. Learning from them to garden and preserve food was the beginning of her interest in whole food plant-based eating.
She loves her husband and family fearlessly. Following the loss of their older son to cancer, she began to understand the saying, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” She wants families of all ages to experience outstanding health and longevity, to see people reverse chronic disease, and finally, to see people not simply survive but thrive for their entire lifetime—each of these fuels her passion to see them fullymade.
